Thursday, October 29, 2026 — Short Covering Sweeps NIFTY from BC to Above R2, 348 Points, Trend Day Close at 23,047

Wednesday's session ended with Short Buildup OI intact into the close — fresh shorts built between 22,800 and 22,875.5 (the wHigh), a net-negative cumulative delta, and a settle right on the POC. The analysis going into Thursday was clear: if the open held above 22,800 on Short Covering OI, those shorts were going to be squeezed. Thursday gave us a slight variation — not a gap-up, but a quiet open at 22,740, a brief and decisive test below the day's BC, and then 347 points of Short Covering that took NIFTY through every resistance level up to and briefly above R2 (23,048.7), touching the wHigh at 23,059.0. The session closed at 23,047.4. OI fell 236,470 on the day. This was not a buying-conviction rally — it was a short-covering sweep.

Order Flow Analysis

The open and the BC test

The session opened at 22,740.0, precisely at the day's Pivot Point. Thursday's CPR — computed from Wednesday's range of 22,875.5 / 22,567.0 / Settle 22,778.0 — printed a 38-point width: BC 22,721.3, PP 22,740.2, TC 22,759.1. A narrow CPR at the start of a session is a statistical signal for a trending day. The question is always direction.

The first few bars resolved it. Price dipped from the open to a session low of 22,711.3 — a 29-point probe below BC. The footprint showed negative delta in those early bars: bears were still adding, still positioned from Wednesday's overnight build. The dip held. No continuation selling appeared below BC. Volume was thin at the low. The OI Sense began reading Short Covering — bears were not adding, they were exiting.

From 22,711.3, the session's floor was set.

The squeeze through the pivot stack

The recovery from 22,711.3 was not explosive at first — it was methodical, grinding through each level of the pivot stack and finding buyers, not sellers, at each one. PP (22,740.2) reclaimed within the first hour. TC (22,759.1) gave way without a fight. The Camarilla H3 level at 22,862.8 — which had acted as the previous day's VAH reference — was cleared.

R1 at 22,913.4 saw the first real volume cluster. The footprint showed large bid-side absorption bars at this level: buyers stepped in with size, sellers were absorbed, and price continued upward. The cumulative delta, which had started the session in negative territory, crossed to positive through the mid-session and stayed there.

By the time price reached the Camarilla H4 zone at 22,947.7, the character of the tape had shifted completely. What had opened as a cautious session was by now a one-directional affair. The OI Sense was holding Short Covering throughout — no new long positioning was being added at scale, just bears exiting.

The wHigh break and the close

R2 sits at 23,048.7 for Thursday's session. Price broke through it on the way to the session high of 23,059.0 — the wHigh (weekly high), which had previously been resistance on October 19. The break above R2 was brief: no sustained acceptance above 23,050, and the close came in at 23,047.4, a point below R2 and four points below the wHigh print. The closing bar printed above the session's POC (22,936), above TC, above R1, above H4 — a clean Trend Day Up profile, closing at the upper end of the day's range.

Cumulative delta for the session ended at +0.702 (positive), confirmed across the entire afternoon move. The VWAP held an ascending trajectory through the session without a meaningful retest. Every pullback was shallow and bought.

NIFTY order flow, October 29, 2026

15-minute footprint. Open at PP (22,740). Initial dip to 22,711.3 below BC (22,721) — thin volume, no follow-through. Short Covering OI character from the first reversal bar. Rally through PP, TC, Camarilla H3, R1 (22,913), H4 (22,948) and briefly above R2 (23,049) to the wHigh at 23,059.0. Cumulative delta turns positive mid-session and holds. Close at 23,047.4. VWAP ascending throughout. No meaningful selling after the low.

Key Order Flow Takeaway

  • The BC test at 22,711 was the session's pivot — bears had one chance to extend Wednesday's sell-off below the CPR, and they couldn't hold it. The failure at BC on thin volume, with Short Covering OI reading immediately after, was the inflection point that defined Thursday.
  • OI fell 236K on a 269-point up day — this is the textbook Short Covering print. Not a single data point in the session supported net new long buying at scale. The rally was mechanically driven by bears exiting their Wednesday build.
  • Cumulative delta ended at +0.702 (positive) despite the early negative bars — buyers absorbed every attempt at selling through the session and emerged as the net winners on delta. A Short Covering day with positive delta confirmation is structurally cleaner than one where price rises on negative delta (which signals short-covering but not buyer conviction).
  • R2 (23,048.7) was the ceiling — price poked above it to 23,059 but found no buyers willing to extend. The close below R2 means Thursday resolved as a Short Covering sweep to the R2 zone, not a breakout above it. Whether R2 becomes support or resistance on Friday is the next question.
  • Wednesday's Short Buildup overhang is now cleared — the positions built from 22,800 to 22,875.5 on October 28 have, in aggregate, been forced out. The OI read on Friday will start from a cleaner base.

Market Profile Analysis

Thursday's profile is a Trend Day Up — price opened at the lower end of the day's range and closed near the top, with the session's value building progressively higher through the day. The profile shape is elongated upward: thin at the bottom, progressively wider through the mid-range, with the POC sitting in the upper third of the day's distribution.

POC at 22,936 [21/33] — with 21 of 33 TPOs clustering at this price, the session's most-traded zone was in the 22,900–22,960 band. This is characteristic of a Short Covering day: price moves quickly through the lower levels (few TPOs there), stalls briefly in the squeeze zone as sellers assess, and then breaks through again. The heavy TPO concentration at 22,936 marks where the bulk of Thursday's volume changed hands.

Close at 23,047.4 — above the POC — a session that closes above its POC on a Trend Day Up is a bullish settlement. Value was built in the 22,900s; price closed in the 23,000s. The market left no ambiguity about the direction of Thursday's conviction.

Poor High at 23,049 — the session high of 23,059 was printed on a thin handful of TPOs. No acceptance above 23,050. This is a Poor High: price reached the wHigh zone, found no responsive sellers at scale, but also found no buyers willing to build value there. A Poor High above R2 and the wHigh is an invitation — Thursday's high will be revisited, either to be accepted (bullish) or rejected again (forming a double-resistance structure).

The prior sessions visible in the profile chart show the broader context: Thursday's close at 23,047 takes price back above the October 28 VAH (22,824.5) and toward the Mon 19 Oct reference at 23,136. The gap between Thursday's Poor High (23,049) and the Mon 19 Oct level (23,136) is the next structural target if the Short Covering momentum continues.

NIFTY market profile, October 29, 2026

30-minute TPO. Trend Day Up. Open 22,740 at PP, dip to 22,711.3 below BC. POC 22,936 [21/33 TPOs]. VAH 23,049 (Poor High), VAL 22,864. Close 23,047.4 — above POC, near session high. Elongated upward profile shape consistent with Short Covering trend day. Prior sessions visible left; the October 28 two-tailed balanced profile contrasts sharply with Thursday's directional structure.

Structural Levels

Thursday's session redraws the map above Wednesday's balanced profile:

  • 23,136 — Mon 19 Oct 26 reference (upper horizontal from prior week). The next major overhead level if Friday continues upward
  • 23,059.0 — Thursday's High / wHigh / Poor High (Oct 29). The session ceiling; unfinished business above R2
  • 23,049 — R2 (Thursday). Close was just below it; whether this becomes support on Friday is the key test
  • 22,936 — POC (Oct 29, [21/33]). The session's value centre; a pullback to here Friday would be a normal retest
  • 22,875.5 — Prior wHigh / Poor High (Oct 28). Now the first support below Thursday's VAL
  • 22,864 — VAL (Oct 29). The lower edge of Thursday's value area
  • 22,824.5 — VAH (Oct 28). Reclaimed Thursday; now the secondary support
  • 22,776.8 — POC (Oct 28). The balance point from Wednesday; a deep pullback to here would be structurally significant
  • 22,721.3 — BC (Thursday's CPR). The level that held at the morning test; any return here would be a long way from current settlement

Options and Futures OI

Short Covering was the dominant OI character for the full session. OI fell by 236,470 contracts against a 269.4-point price gain. The interpretation is unambiguous: the bears who built their Wednesday positions between 22,800 and 22,875 exited on Thursday's rally, generating the fuel for the move.

The OI Sense reading held Short Covering throughout the afternoon, not just in the initial squeeze. This is an important distinction. A short-covering rally that transitions to Long Buildup mid-session (OI rising on continued price strength) would signal a genuine shift in conviction. Thursday did not produce that signal. OI fell cleanly through the session. The bears covered; new bulls did not step in to replace them at scale.

What this means for Friday: the Short Buildup overhang from Wednesday is cleared. The OI base is now lighter. A continuation move on Friday would need to generate its own conviction — either through Long Buildup (new buyers establishing positions) or through another event-driven Short Covering episode. Without one of those, the most likely Friday outcome is a consolidation around Thursday's POC (22,936) and the CPR zone that Thursday's session has now created for the next day.

Trading Implications

Thursday delivered the bull case from Wednesday's analysis: the Short Buildup overhang was cleared, price moved through every resistance level from BC to above R2, and the session closed near the high on positive cumulative delta and Short Covering OI. The 348-point move was structurally clean.

For the bull case: Friday opens above Wednesday's Poor High (22,875.5) and above the October 28 VAH (22,824.5). Any morning hold above the Thursday POC (22,936) is a bullish structure. A break and acceptance above Thursday's Poor High (23,059) would target the Mon 19 Oct reference at 23,136. The conditions for further Short Covering-driven upside have reduced — the Wednesday overhang is cleared — so continuation would need Long Buildup confirmation.

For the bear case: A gap-down Friday open below Thursday's VAL (22,864) would be the first warning. A failure to hold the October 28 Prior High zone (22,875) on any early test would put Thursday's entire Trend Day Up in question. Thursday produced no new structural overhead — the Poor High at 23,049 is the natural fade level for any opening-range rejection Friday morning.

The POC at 22,936 is Thursday's resolution level. A Friday session that builds value around 22,936 confirms Thursday's Trend Day Up as an accepted range expansion. A Friday session that gaps up and extends is a momentum continuation. A Friday session that returns below 22,864 (Thursday's VAL) begins to question whether Thursday was a genuine structural shift or a one-day Short Covering event.

Conclusion

Thursday cleared Wednesday's books. The Short Buildup that held into Wednesday's close — shorts built from 22,800 to 22,875.5 — came unwound across 347 points of Thursday range, from a BC test at 22,711.3 to a wHigh print at 23,059.0. OI fell 236K. Cumulative delta ended positive. The profile printed a clean Trend Day Up with the POC in the upper third of the day's range and the close above it. Short Covering was the fuel; the frame gave the levels. Thursday's session resolved exactly the way the framework read suggested it would.

The question for Friday is whether the Short Covering story has more chapters — through Long Buildup confirmation above Thursday's Poor High at 23,059 — or whether Thursday was the complete clearing event, and the tape needs a session to find its new equilibrium around the 22,936 POC.
